Learning Highlights

Lekei's Learning Highlights

When I experience the glowing light-bulb, I don't take
notes about it so it is really kind of hard to think of
a lot of occasions when this has happened. First I will
explain how I feel when I don't know something, it
irritates me and sometimes I even feel powerless. The
reason I say this is because sometimes I just can't stop
thinking about whatever it is I am trying to learn or
what I don't know my be effecting another part of my
life. However, I am one that will ask questions usually
until I am satisfied ( sometimes I talk to people that
have the ability to explain information on a more
rudimentary level). I am a firm believer in
understanding a concept 1st, then focusing on the
technicalities about the topic(s) later.

The story I want to talk about is my SAT scores, since
this is one the most recent situation that has come up.
Well I never really understood where my score was in
relation to others that have taken the test. I
believed that I did not do well, but this did not
concern me because I already knew what kind of student I
was and that no test could predict how well I would
perform in college--my work would, but I always
wondered. No counselor ever sat down with me in high
school and explained my results to me (they should
have), so as a young adult I did not know anything about
what the scores mailed to my house meant. Over the years
as I matured I always wanted to go back and go over my
scores to get a better understanding, but I never had
time. Then this summer came and I had to take a STAT
class (I was not looking forward to it),now I am so glad
that I did, because there is so much stuff that is
useful to me...who knew! Since this class I know about z-
scores, raw scores, standard deviations, percentiles and
the list could go on and on. I have good news, now I am
motivated to figuring out my SAT scores and I am happy
about doing so. Last Thursday I went to West Virginia
State College's admissions office and got a copy of my
test scores--I looked over them, but I haven't worked
the score out yet. I must say, it feels much better
being able to do it myself than having someone doing for
me. Now I have the *power* to take the
initiative!
