Preface

My MRP essential question is, “ How are the skills of Speech-Language Pathologists used in intercultural communication involving the pragmatics of language? One reason I chose this topic is to educate myself as well as others about issues involving cultural differences since I plan to specialize in this area as a practicing Speech Pathologists. I desired to find information that would allow me to make sound decisions about which direction I choose for my career path. Also I find other peoples’ backgrounds to be fascinating, over the years I have made friends within my community and I have made friends with people from different parts of the world. This experience has ignited my passion in educating myself to improve my ability to communicate and understand those that may not think or behave the way I do. I find myself drawn to other people, those within my culture and outside of my culture, this project was a great opportunity to learn about some things that I find so interesting. My first essential question was a little too broad, although it was a good question it did not directly address what I was aiming for, so I thought about what I was trying to say and I also considered the material available on the topic. I have found that this has not been an easy topic to research, which brings me to the third reason I chose it. I wanted to focused on a topic that most people are not that accustomed to, by doing this I can height the awareness of the presence of issues surrounding this topic. Maybe by heightening the awareness of this topic a flow of information, addressing this in more detail within in academic environments, opportunities for employment and assistance for those in need will be created. This research project is composed of six genres: Poem, Referral Letter, BioWeb, Newsletter, Newsletter, PowerPoint and a Public Service Announcement.
