My Welcome to You

Hello, welcome to my webliography! I am Lekei Tolliver a Communication Disorders student at Marshall University. Communication Disorders majors are commonly known as students that are studying to become Speech-Langauge Pathologists, Audiologists, or either both. This weblog has been created by myself to document my growth in accessing and understanding information that is available to me. The class in which I am learning how to manage working via the World Wide Web is CD 315, Karen Mccomas is my instructor.

My Personal Life

Being married to Anthony for seven years, we enjoy a little sunshine in our lives, so whenever we have the opportunity we cruise on down to HOT and HUMID Florida.

In addition to being the fabulous wife, I am the mother of Ajnah. Aside from using baby sign language, singing and playing her instruments she and I log on to Nick Jr. to play fun educational games.

When I am not playing with Dora the Explorer I like to shop at Lane Bryant and Shoe Buy Online ( check'em out they have great buys!!!)....Oh I almost forgot to mention Silhouettes Catalog, I love it!

I am a christian that enjoys attending weekly church services as well as reading the Holy Scriptures. When possible I tune into Kay Authur's television Bible teaching class.

My Discipline

Now that I am studying to become a Speech Pathologist It is important for me to build my reserve of useful information. Here are a few sites that I have found to be of interest:

ASHA is the national organization for Speech-Langauge Pathologists, they set all of the standards that Speech-Language Pathologists and academic programs must abide by in this field. Their site offers an abundance of facts concerning this field as well as links to other sites that may be useful. This is the organization the all Speech-Language Pathologist should be certified by in order received benefits such as being employed by certain businesses, malpractice insurance, etc.

Kids Speech is a site maintained by Nancy R. Kaufman, M.A., CCC-SLP, she is the director of the Kaufman Children's Center located in MI state. This site is has testimonals and information on several tell-tell signs of different disorders (Apraxia of Speech, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, CAPD etc...). In addition, the site also has information about materials and workshops concerning Kaufman Praxis.

Speech Tx is a site filled with good activities for therapy--and a lot of it is FREE! It is a site maintained by J. Mitchell, the site has information on language, articulation, emergent literacy and technology. Another bonus about this site is that it has it's Newletter Archives accessible to showcase topics such as AAC for adults and children, putting language and articulation therapy to music, etc...

My Research Project

I am really intrigued by differences that compose the human population. From skin color to hair texture, from speaking to behaving, all of these things are apart of who each one of us are. My research will focus on how our own cultures effect the way we communicate with others within our culture and those without our own concepts of how thing are to be done.

Within my project there will be three different views represented, but interconnected by the same thread--intercultural communication. I want to know what role can Speech-Language Pathologist play in intercultural communications. Have you every stopped and thought about what someone else in a situation you have been in would do? How does their culture influence their actions....a little bit or a lot? Hopefully by the end of my project I will have a answer.... and maybe it will cause you I come up with your own answers! Click here to see a rough outline of my project.

I thought it would be nice to offer some links to sites that have different cultural perspectives. Wisdom is an attribute that is admired no matter where you are located on this great sphere, so here is a list of International Proverb Sites. There is a television station I always enjoy watching, it appears to me that they offer programs that allow me to travel to the farthest corners of the earth, it is PBS—I wanted to use some of their material in my MRP, but that is another story (check out my reflection to see what I am talking about). Lonely Planet is a show that has really made me want to travel to other countries. The people on the show are excited and candid about what the countries they are visiting are like. Go this site to get some information about any country you find to be of interest Lonely Planet. Here is another website the I thought was interesting; the website has input from people from several cultures, read as they explain different aspects of their native societies. Click here to enter RICE University's Website (type Topics Online Magazine in the search box on their Homepage). And the Last link I will offer in this area is well known for its mission to learn about and understand other cultures, and people in general. National Geographic has been around for forever; go to this site they have some good items to view.

My Fun Stuff

If you have never watched her show you should B. Smith is a lady that explores it all from high fashion to the kitchen--check her out!

Is anyone in the mood for checkers...I am. If you want to play free games stop by Yahoo's Game Page (my brother hipped me to this).

My Tidbits

I am rounding off this portion of my weblog with some odds and ends, yet they are no less interesting than the previous links....o.k. the search engines are, but I am not talking about those (smiling).

This site is for people that are interested in history and math. It focuses on cultures other than those that are European and Islamic in origin that have had influences on mathematics.Click here Math History.

If you ever need a foreign language translator or dictionary, look no further. Click here Tranlang's Website.

Are you having trouble using PowerPoint program? Try this Microsoft help on for size.Click here PowerPoint Helper.

O.K. here are some search engines that I use (information found by these engines may not be scholarly), ya know it is always good to have an extra one, just like an extra pair of pantyhoses Google or try Northern Light....sounds like they are in the goose down business (ha ha).

Now here are a couple of academic databases (information found will be scholarly) that I have used to locate the articles that will follow EBSCO Host Web and ERIC Electronic Documents. Click here to see a list of
Possible Library Sources for My Project.

I hope you have enjoyed what you have viewed.
Yall come back now, ya hear!

LOL,

Lekei
