7th Summer Journal

7th Summer Journal

This week has been quite interesting from meeting new people to finding a book on intercultural communications for .50 cents. One of the new people that I met this weekend was Melissa Cade's hubstrama, nice guy. I was sooo embarrassed, because Tony put him to work as soon as they arrived at our house (he asked him to hook up my scanner), this is the scanner that I will now be returning to the store since the thing never turns off -- even if it is idle for days. Early in the week Aj and I went to the library to get stuff for my MRP, it just so happened to they had a used book sale going on. I picked up one book it seemed like it was going to be useful --it wasn't, but as I reach out to sat the book down there it was a book titled : Intercultural Communication: A Reader. I could have fallen out on the floor I was so happy, shoot I have been looking for this type of infomation in one source since the beginning of the project--God is good all of the time! Even the fact that while we were in the library I had left my sunroof and windows open, so that it would not be so hot when we got back in the car--suprize, suprize it rained like cats and dogs, but after I got home I was still floating on cloud 9! Praise God STATS is over and I got an AAA..! The summer is moving on and I am glad about it, now I have to start studying for the GRE…yip-yip hooray.

Well the assignments this week included: ongoing library search, describing our mailing list assignment, two more genre drafts, reviewing our peers’ genre drafts. I have completed most of the assignment early in the week and I have really been trying to go over my previous genres. One of the genres I have just completed I am not too sure about, is my referral letter I really need a good example of how one is supposed to look. If anyone has any suggestions I am open. An assignment that I have enjoyed is the peer reviews I have an interesting group of people as peers, there is a lot of creativity floating around in our class… who knew! Now the big thing for myself and a few other students to focus on is copyright info this will be an interesting voyage to take. After discussing some things with Mrs. Mccomas, I called the PBS station in Charleston and talked to one of their radio spokesmen about using copyright stuff he said he didn’t see any problem with using a piece of material, because people do it all of the time. He said that as long as I wasn’t using it for profit and gave credit to the owners that there should be no problem. He made it clear that he does not specialize in this and that I may want to contact Marshall’s Law School Department. I wish I didn't have to go through all of this, but something good will come out of this. I have almost all my corrections and things that I want to do going through my mind—one night I could hardly get to sleep thinking about the alterations I plan on making to my MRP. I want to put my links in side my Newletter but I can't or I don't know how.

6th Summer Journal

6th Summer Journal

I’m exhausted, this week has been rough and rugged, from doctor appointments to makeup quizzes, I have heard and seen it all. I must say next week is looking much brighter, since my STATS class will be over. I like the class and the professor, but I need a break!!! I told someone that I was going to summer school all summer long, they said, “you are a glutton for punishment…” I later found out in my STATS class that summer school students are usually motivated and academically dedicated—this was encouraging to know. I have to remember that this is the day that the Lord has made…there are no bad days, just that some days are more difficult than others (smiling).

The Assignment lineup this week isn’t enormous in number, but the magnitude of time and work put into them is. Assignments included: Library Search, Checking on our “pro” mailing lists, 2 MRP: Genre Drafts, Read an article and create a prompt and the Online Journal. I had planned on completing these earlier in the week, but it didn’t happen.

The first thing I want to discuss is my mailing list. Well I have already established that my old one was a dud, so this week I went to that address with all of the discussion groups listed, I ended up subscribing to four new ones. One of them is a “live one”, man those people email like crazy. I likethe fact that out of all the emails I have read a lot of the writers refer to some type of reference source when justifying their views. Maybe I’ll learn the language and start getting into the discussion (I don’t know). The second thing I want to talk about is the time I had trying to get these MRP Genres done. I thought that I would do a newsletter and a observation report. I started with the observation report, I went the address I was given, but I could not get in to the files--I didn't know the password, so I just kept typing stuff in. Finally cd315 worked, but not everytime...beats me, I have no idea why this was the case. Oh well any, I got to the list of forms and printed up two different ones, come to find out I don't know how to do observations of a client that has language problems concerning pragmatics, that are not medical or developmental. So I called a local hosptial to speak with an on staff SLP. Peter something said that is type of thing is not done around this area very much, in fact he said that he did not know of any pragmatic tests based on cultural differences. So the observation reports went out the window for now( I'll try to find something on the web). My second Genre adventure involved the newsletter and spending all night trying to perfect those little text boxes, only to have everything turn out ugly. I have found out that either I am not copying the newsletter template to word correctly or that when a template is copied to word it loses quality. I ended up having to start from scratch in word and make up my own template for a newletter....I must say it isn't as pretty as my first one (but it work for now).

Well the things I learned this week are how to use a lot of accessories in my computer programs, things I would have not considered doing if I wasn't doing this project. And I know now how to get creative pieces of material from my computer to my weblog. Let's see what happens next week..

5th Summer Journal

5th Summer Journal

So we meet again at the journal place, this week has been very busy for me, between trying to complete my assignments and bracing myself for my STATS midterm exam, I have been hanging on by my fingernails. Sleep deprived, aching back I am about to reach the peak for of this week. After being super concerned about my midterm, I later found out that it is possible that I only missed a portion of one question--talk about
uplifting. I just may receive the desired Blue Star
Sticker Award, yet! Oh.. exciting news, my father came to see us this weekend. He and Ajnah played and played, when she called him grand-daddy he melted like butter (smiling). Then he got on the phone and bragged to relatives saying "my baby called me grand-daddy." It has been good to see my dad and talk with him (my dad and I are tight). I guess I am still a daddy's girl in some
aspects of my life....and I wouldn't change a thing!

Time has grown shorter for assignment datelines--we are really on the ball. My objective this week was to finish my assignments that are making up my MRP. Assignments this week included: Library Searching, Keeping an eye on our "Pro" mailing list, MRP: Drafts Genres2, Internalizing Web Evaluations, Read tips for Powerpoint and write an Online Line Journal.

The assignment I want to talk about is the Library
Searching, I tried several times before I had any
success with finding information connect with intercultural issues. One thing I have learned is that in order for me to find articles dealing with my interest, I have to just enter Speech Pathology and then hit search. Once I get results I have to scan the articles highlighted words and click on the ones that related to my topic. I don't know if this will happen with all the databases, I'll just have to wait and see. Then there was a little confusion about which APA style we should use. I decided to use example 88 on page 279 in the 5th edition book. I noticed that several people where listing web addresses, but I hope it is ok to list the database we found the article in.

The second thing I want to talk about is how excited I am about working on this project, my creative juices are really flowing. I like creating things for nothing but an idea. I find myself looking over my creation and others over and over...my husband probably thinks that I am mental (grin). The poem has allowed me to express feeling I normally don't get to in a classroom setting. Powerpoint is the BOMB...wow I am becoming a computer nerd
(smiling)!

I have become more capable at conveying my ideas using some of these computer tools. I have learned how to use the powerpoint program for the benefit of my MRP, but I think that later I might develop a website for my husband's
business. I almost feel like I am in my element....(smiling).
